Open your home. Save a life.
Foster families provide life-saving support for cats and dogs who need extra care. From orphaned kittens and puppies to animals recovering from injury, your home can be a safe haven when the shelter isn’t the ideal environment.

ARC Fosters
provide valuable care to the animals in our shelter
The experience
Fostering is one of the most impactful ways to help a rescue animal.
You’re giving a cat or dog a safe, quiet place to heal, grow, and prepare for adoption. For some, that means being born into a calm home instead of a shelter. For others, it means learning to trust again after illness, injury, or neglect.
It’s incredibly rewarding to watch an animal gain confidence, recover, and eventually find their forever home. Many fosters say it’s hard to say goodbye, but also one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.
Fostering can also be challenging. Some animals need medication, bottle feeding, or extra patience as they adjust to life in a home. And while rare, there are times when outcomes aren’t what we hope for.
Even so, our foster families continue to open their homes again and again, knowing the difference they make is life-changing.
Foster responsibilities
Foster care looks different depending on the animal, but all foster homes play a hands-on role in daily care and support.
You may be caring for:
- Pregnant or nursing cats and dogs
- Orphaned kittens or puppies
- Animals recovering from illness or injury
- Cats and dogs needing socialization
- Dogs needing a break from the kennel environment
- Animals waiting for space at the shelter
Responsibilities can include feeding, cleaning, basic training, socialization, and transporting animals to veterinary appointments if needed. Some animals may require medication or more specialized care. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.
Foster requirements
Foster homes must be able to provide a safe, stable, and quiet environment for animals in their care.
- A private residence with space to separate animals if needed
- Availability to care for the animal based on their specific needs
- Willingness to commit for the duration of the foster placement
- Ability to handle the physical and emotional aspects of animal care
Length of stay varies. For example, a pregnant cat and her kittens may need approximately eight weeks of care, while other animals may require shorter or longer placements.
We ask foster families to be reliable, communicative, and committed to providing a safe and supportive environment.
